SMI Red-M

SMI Red-M – an eye-tracking device for tablets, laptops and displays up to 22". It measures current direction of user's sight with accuracy of 0.5 degree.

Red-M Hardware Module

Red-M – is a hardware eye-tracking module, which was developed and created by SMI (SensoMotoric Instruments). In comparison with other devices, this gadget has compact size and really light weight, which allows to install it as on desktop displays with diagonal up to 22”, as well as on laptops and tablets. This device has following dimensions: 24cm x 2,5cm x 3,3cm, while the weight of the module with a USB-adapter is just 130 grams.

The device can be used in various psychological researches and tests, to evaluate usability of computer services and websites, as well as for eye-tracking in medical purposes. This device is provided with a software complex for fast calibration and requires only one USB-port.

Red-M Module Setup

Red-M provide stable recognition of user’s sight direction regardless of the color of eyes, which makes it possible to work in glasses or contact lenses, while the device will adjust itself for lighting conditions. Provided software allows the user to perform various calibration procedures (2, 5 and 9 positions). Red-M has minimum delay (not more than 20ms) and allows to identify user’s sight direction with an accuracy of 0.5 degree. Effective field of view is 32cm x 21cm, while recommended distance to the face of the user is from 50 to 75 centimeters.

The module works under Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 (32-bit and 64-bit) operational systems. Free software kit for developers allows them to create additional applications to work in conjunction with Red-M.

Fast calibration, high sight measurement accuracy and ability to adapt to various lighting conditions make Red-M an effective assistive technology for medical institutions and personal use. When used in conjunction with virtual keyboards, it provides paralyzed people with a possibility to type texts, thus communicating with their relatives, friends and medical personnel. Furthermore, this device can also be used in ophthalmological researches. SMI Red-M can be used not only as an assistive technology, because it allows identifying the zones of interest during expert evaluation of websites, software and various services.
